Western Railways will soon replace the destination signboards on outstation trains with LED boards.
The system will be supported by Global Positioning System and provide train number, next stop and station name.
Initially the LED boards will be installed in 600 coaches at Rs 8 crore and later used in all trains.
According to railway sources, tenders for the boards were opened in September last year and will be awarded shortly. "Some networks are already using LED boards. This is the first time when WR is going install these boards. The system will be GPS-enabled and in future passengers will able to see railway information inside the trains too. This system is remote-controlled and programmable. Often at night passengers are unable to see the name of station on boards but the LEDs will address that problem." said a senior official.
